The trial court granted discovery motions and later a summary judgment in favor of defendants. Plaintiff’s appeal contends he was not properly served. This was the situation: A self-represented plaintiff had filed a notice of change of address that lists the address of a UPS store at which he rents a mailbox and states that “all notices and documents regarding the action should be sent to [the listed] address.” Delivery was made to the UPS store. Code of Civil Procedure section 1011, subsection (b), provides that personal service on a party to a lawsuit shall be made in the manner specifically provided in particular cases, or, if no specific provision is made, service may be made by leaving the notice or other paper at the party’s residence with some person no less than 18 years of age. The Court of Appeal concluded personal service was effectuated. (Sweeting v. Murat (Cal. App. Second Dist., Div. 4; November 13, 2013) 221 Cal.App.4th 507.)
